Hunger Never Takes A Vacation Fund Drive

The 11th annual "Hunger Never Takes A Vacation" will take place in from May 30 through June 30, 2010.

The Springfield News & Sun sponsors this event. Donations are collected to benefit the Second Harvest Food  Bank which distributes food to Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties pantries, soup kitchens and other various agencies that feed the hungry.

A recent Feeding America study shows that in any given week 4,200 people in our three count service area depend on emergency food providers such as the agencies we support through the food bank.  This drive helps us source food to get through the difficult summer months where dependency is even greater.  Children that rely on free school lunches to eat, suddenly are faced with no meals at all unless their parents can access a pantry or soup kitchen.  Every dollar donated to the food bank can provide seven meals to someone in need.  In this tough economic environment this year, our goal is $40,000, or a little over $10,000 a week.  That would provide 280,000 meals (almost half of the need) to families losing jobs, homes, and their dignity.  Many of which are your neighbors, friends, family, or strangers you pass daily not realizing the desperation of their situation.

Please help us fight hunger in our community!  Envelopes are in every Sunday Springfield News/Sun, or you can mail a donation to:

Thanks you for your compassion and generosity!

Wittenberg's "Empty Bowls" Event

In 1990 a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students solve a problem.  They were searching for a way to raise funds to support a food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fund raising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup, salad, and bread, and were invited to keep their bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world. By the following year the originators had developed this concept into "Empty Bowls", a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. The Imagine /RENDER Group, a 501(c)3 organization, was created to promote the project. Since then Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, with millions of dollars having been raised to combat hunger.

The 15th annual Wittenberg Empty Bowls dinner was held on Thursday, March 26th, 2009 at the Central Dining Room, Wittenberg University. Eight hundred fifty bowls were hand crafted for this year’s event. The event offered a variety of delicious soups and salad buffet for a $15 donation. While eating, free entertainment was provided by many on-campus musical groups that added ambience. Volunteers washed the beautifully hand-crafted bowls and patrons were able to take them home as a keepsake and an ongoing reminder that “Hunger” exists everywhere, as many people in our own community go hungry every day. Special thanks goes to SODEXHO Catering Service and their staff for all their support and in donating 56 gallons of their delicious Chicken Bow Tie and Potato Leek Soups. We would also like to thank Bob Evans for donating 25 gallons of their delicious Chili and The Linardos Villa and Anna Plataniotis for donating 14 gallons of their Chicken Avgolemono Soup.

Food Drives

Looking for a meaningful way to take action and a great opportunity to get involved? Food and fund drives raise awareness of hunger in the community, collect food for people in need, and play an essential role in the fight against Hunger. Food and fund drives are conducted throughout the year to help stock up the food bank to meet the demands of its agencies. Food drives are accomplished through door to door or use of collection barrels (to name a few methods).

Contact Barb Eggers at (937)325-8715 or email Barb to request a collection barrel for your upcoming food drive for the food bank. All food will be restricted to the county where it is donated.  You can do a food drive for any occasion, any time of the year, and even specifically target special needs such as personal care (toothpaste, toilet paper, diapers, etc.) which are always in short supply and high demand!

Below are links to some specific food drives conducted annually.
