Empty Bowls

In 1990 a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students solve a problem.  They were searching for a way to raise funds to support a food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fund raising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup, salad, and bread, and were invited to keep their bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world. By the following year the originators had developed this concept into "Empty Bowls", a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. The Imagine /RENDER Group, a 501(c)3 organization, was created to promote the project. Since then Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, with millions of dollars having been raised to combat hunger.

The 15th annual Wittenberg Empty Bowls dinner was held on Thursday, March 26th, 2009 at the Central Dining Room, Wittenberg University. Eight hundred fifty bowls were hand crafted for this year’s event. The event offered a variety of delicious soups and salad buffet for a $15 donation. While eating, free entertainment was provided by many on-campus musical groups that added ambience. Volunteers washed the beautifully hand-crafted bowls and patrons were able to take them home as a keepsake and an ongoing reminder that “Hunger” exists everywhere, as many people in our own community go hungry every day. Special thanks goes to SODEXHO Catering Service and their staff for all their support and in donating 56 gallons of their delicious Chicken Bow Tie and Potato Leek Soups. We would also like to thank Bob Evans for donating 25 gallons of their delicious Chili and The Linardos Villa and Anna Plataniotis for donating 14 gallons of their Chicken Avgolemono Soup.

Food Drives

Looking for a meaningful way to take action and a great opportunity to get involved? Food and fund drives raise awareness of hunger in the community, collect food for people in need, and play an essential role in the fight against Hunger. Food and fund drives are conducted throughout the year to help stock up the food bank to meet the demands of its agencies. Food drives are accomplished through door to door or use of collection barrels (to name a few methods).

Contact Barb Eggers at (937)325-8715 or email Barb to request a collection barrel for your upcoming food drive for the food bank. All food will be restricted to the county where it is donated.  You can do a food drive for any occasion, any time of the year, and even specifically target special needs such as personal care (toothpaste, toilet paper, diapers, etc.) which are always in short supply and high demand!

Below are some specific food drives conducted annually.

Post Office Food Drive

The Springfield Branch 45 of National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Post office, the AFL-CIO, and your local United Way conducted a food drive to help needy families in Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties. Donations of canned food goods and other non-perishable food items were left near mailboxes on walking routes or placed in mailboxes on rural routes. All food donated to the Second Harvest Food bank remained in the county in which it was collected.

This was the 14th annual NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) Food Drive. This year, 39,078 pounds of food (33,933 in Clark County and 5,145 in Champaign County) were collected at a critical time when food supplies remaining from the holiday period are now exhausted.

Soccer Food Drive

Even the smallest food drives bring huge relief to many individuals and families in our community. In 2008, a food drive was organized at the National Trails Park and Recreations Soccer complex in Springfield. The drive brought in 2000 pounds of much needed food for the Clark County food pantry.

For help or ideas in planning an event , please feel free to contact Barb Eggers at 325-8715.

Date of next year's event: TBA

Holiday Food Drive

This annual event will benefit the local Second Harvest Food Bank. The Springfield Kiwanis Club sponsors this event with cash prizes to the top four schools with the highest donations. All area schools/businesses are asked to collect food or funds for distribution during the busy holiday season.

The 2008 event raised 49,128 pounds of food to needy families in Clark County through collection barrels and events in the area schools.  OUTSTANDING!!

Interested in donating food or funds? Contact Barbara Eggers at (937)325-8715 or  email Barb for further information.
